After Slaves were freed from the Southerners they quickly began to demand for education. While they were enslaved very few of them were able to be educated in writing or reading or anything known as formal education. It was very important for them to be formally educated after the war, because they were unable to for a very long time and they were beginning to realize how important it was. They quickly realized that while being uneducated they were unable to realize what was going on in the world around them other than by the word of mouth, which can sometimes be untrue. Free African Americans demanded formal education. Thus, they were able to argue for it, and get their formal education. When the African Americans were slaves they had little to no education none of which was formal since they were "only useful in the field." Many African Americans were quick to realize education was needed and that it is now what they need to get. Now that the Blacks are free they are allowed to have a formal education. There are few teachers but the Freedmen's Bureau is also in place to give support to the Blacks. Although The Freedmen's Bureau did not hire teachers they were there to help the Blacks at any point in time.
